God is Love

Bible Reading – 1 John 4:7-21

As Valentine's Day gets closer, I keep thinking about how great the love of God is.  I remember that God loved us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins.  Not only did Jesus die so our sins could be forgiven, but He resurrected back to life so that we no longer have to fear death.  Sin and death are defeated in Jesus Christ for all those who love Him.  Valentines is a season of love, and we would do well to think more about love as that great day approaches.

1 John has a lot to say about love, but one of the most striking things John says is in verse eight, “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”  Before God got a hold of my life, I thought I knew what love was.  I had family and friends that I loved very much, but it was not until God got a hold of my life and saved me that I began to see what true love is.  I was really good at loving people I liked and enjoyed being around.  But here I was, a sinner who did not deserve God’s love, but He loved me anyway.  If I had been God, I would not have loved me!  I was selfish and self-centered.  I was trapped in a life of sin, but God loved me enough to set me free and make me new.  God’s amazing love is a testimony that all Christians have in common.  We may have different lives and journeys that got us to this point in time, but all believers have been forever changed by God’s love.

In verse eleven John writes, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”  Since God loved me so much and has changed my life, I have learned how to love others.  When we stop and think about how great and amazing God’s love for us is, we can learn how to truly love people.  I have learned how to better love my wife, my daughter, my family, my friends, my enemies, and total strangers.  God is invisible, and nobody has ever seen Him, but when they see how we love they get a glimpse of Him.  Because God loves us so much, He has come to live in us and He teaches us how to love like Him.  We show the world the love of God by how we love the world.  So, take time to think about how great the love of God is for you, and as we thank and praise Him for His love, we will better show Him to the world.

Call to Action:  God is love, and we are so undeserving of Him.  Our sin had separated us from Him, but God loved us so much that He saved us from sin.  And if that was not enough, then God moved into our hearts and He lives in us.  Valentines is a great time to remember how great our God’s love is for us.  Take some time during the day, or even during your prayer time, and thank God for how much He loves you.  He gave us life, and He lives in us and with us every day.  As you think and learn more about God’s love, be sure to tell your children about it.  They need to know about their God, who is love.  We have the responsibility and joy to be the ones who tell them!
